MMR at Chalk River Snapshot
Global First Power (GFP) is a joint venture partnership between Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and USNC-Power Ltd., a wholly owned Canadian subsidiary of Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC). Through the partnership, GFP proposes to construct, own and operate Canada’s first small modular reactor, a USNC-designed Micro Modular Reactor® (MMR®) at Chalk River Laboratories (the Project), a site owned by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) and managed by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL).
The MMR is a 45 megawatt (MW) thermal (approximately 15 MW electrical) reactor. The Project has the potential to generate low-carbon, reliable energy for use in remote applications, ranging from mining or heavy industry to remote communities. The facility encompassing the reactor does not require connection to the electricity grid, meaning it can easily serve remote locations and help reduce the use of fossil fuels as an energy source. The Project at Chalk River will serve as a commercial demonstration to show how this advanced energy technology can be part of the solution to support Canada’s climate change goals.
